Debby

An International Baccalaureate, Cambridge IGCSE, IELTS Trainer and General English Teacher

Hello, my name is Debby and I’m currently an International Baccalaureate, Cambridge IGCSE, IELTS trainer and general English teacher in Batam. I have been teaching English for 5 years as I started teaching since I graduated from James Cook University, Singapore. English is actually fun and easy subject to learn as I’m going to deliver some strategies, so you can learn English easier and faster.

I understand some of you might find difficulty in learning this language since it is not out mother language. But if you understand the tricks, practice what we have learned during the lesson as you give your best effort, English is not that hard. Many students of mine even got 7 and above for their IELTS test, and achieved 8 for their speaking test. Two of my IB students; IB is international curriculum applied by many countries, got 7 and 6 (IB’s highest score is 7)for their last semester test.

In my spare time, sometimes, several schools invite me to be a judge for debate’s competition. Trust me, we can make the lesson becoming easy and fun. I’m going to guide you step by step and help you to conquer all the difficulties you encounter. I’ll see you in my class

Past Continuous Tense

Past Continuous Structure

Subject + Was/Were + Verb +ING

Contoh dari Past Continuous:

  • I was sleeping when you called me.
  • She was playing in the park
  • While we were talking, the pizza arrived.

Penggunaan Past Continuous Tenses:

Contohnya:

She was playing in the park when it started to rain.

I was playing game when John called

The car crashed when we were walking across the street.

è  pendengar bisa mengerti bahwa ‘she was playing’ adalah kejadian yang sedang berlangsung pada saat itu, dan ‘it started to rain’ adalah peristiwa yang menyela atau menginterupsi kejadian yg sedang berlangsung.

è Menjelaskan bahwa ‘I was playing game’ adalah kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada waktu itu (lampau), dan ‘john called’ adalah kejadian yang menganggu/menginterupsi.

è ‘We were walking across the street’ adalah kejadian yang tengah berlangsung di waktu itu (lampau), dan ‘the car crashed’ adalah peristiwa yang menginterupsi.

  1. Parallel Actions
  • Past continuous juga dipakai untuk menunjukkan dua kejadian yang berlangsung  dimasa lalu dengan waktu yang sama.

Contohnya:
While she was sleeping jack was doing his homework.

 Penggunaan While and When
Dalam penggunaan past continues, while and when paling sering digunakan, dimana perbedannya adalah:

  1. While
  • Digunakan jika kedua peristiwa terjadi dalam waktu yang bersamaan/ parallel actions.
  1. When
  • Digunakan ketika adanya peristiwa yang menginterupsi.

  • I was taking writing class with her for my IELTS preparation. There is no doubt that she is professional, skilled, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. I was initially struggling with my biggest problem in writing that is cohesion and coherence. She knew my problem well and guided me how to construct my writing and to maintain the coherence and cohesion, in order to make the readers understand my points clearly, as well as giving word alternatives to enrich my vocabulary, pointing when to use commas, and explaining miscellaneous things which are essential in writing. In the end of the package, I got a final task, by which we both knew that I have made a significant improvement. Anyway, she is certified in teaching IELTS, so don’t worry if you are about to find an IELTS teacher. On top of that, private course will never be more disappointing than group course. I got a huge freedom in asking anything regarding materials, tasks, and even consultation (if your teacher doesn’t mind it), and Miss Debby is one of my favorite teachers.
